Proctored online tests? – Here are my Top 10 Tips!

When you sign up to take an online proctored test, it’s a lot different from taking the same exam at a testing center. Having taken many of these certifications online, here are my top ten tips for success:

  1. Many online exams don’t work with computers that use VPN or firewalls, so it’s best to use a personal device rather than a work-provided computer.
  2. You need to run your system through a check that detects any running applications and close everything but the testing software. I ran into a big “gotcha” on this once, so be sure to log in as early as allowed to do your system check.
  3. Part of taking the test online is proving your identity. Have your photo ID ready. You should also be prepared to have your picture taken. If you wear glasses, you will need to take them off and show them to the proctor. Same thing if you wear a watch – you’ll need to take it off.
  4. Another aspect of online testing is having a clean desk and work environment. There should be absolutely nothing on your desk except your computer, keyboard, and mouse. If you have a second monitor, disconnect it and put it somewhere else – dual monitors are not allowed (and can easily be detected).
  5. Your proctor will instruct you to put your cellphone behind you and out of reach. Don’t leave it in another room, though, because if you need technical support, you still want it to be accessible. I also suggest turning the ringer off so you won’t be distracted should someone call.
  6. Close the door to the room where you’re taking the test. No one should enter the room while you’re sitting the exam, including pets, children, or other people. If this happens, your proctor can disqualify your test.
  7. If you want to drink water, you can have a container, but it must be clear so you can see through it – there should be no logos, words, or labels.
  8. You may or may not be allowed a break, given the length of the exam. That said, I suggest not taking a break. Make sure you use the bathroom right before you begin, and try not to drink too much while taking the test.
  9. One piece of blank paper and a writing instrument is generally allowed. You must show the proctor the piece of paper to confirm that it is empty. This paper can be used to do a brain dump or jot down questions, formulas, or whatever else you need. After the test, you will tear up the paper in front of the proctor (even if you didn’t use it).
  10. Don’t touch your face; this is the hardest part of the exam, in my opinion. I touch my face a lot, as most people do, but if you do this, the proctor will tell you not to. Remember that someone’s always watching you.

Most of my blogs are longer than this, but my intent was to give you a short checklist you can use to prepare for any upcoming online certification tests that are proctored. I hope this helped! If so, please share your story below!
